Night and Day - Amanda knew the behavior her son Danny was exhibiting wasn’t really him!

Patient: Danny, age almost 5

Chief Complaints: tantrums, aggressiveness, night terrors, decreased peer interaction, loss of verbal expression

Amanda knew the behavior her son Danny was exhibiting wasn’t really him! Something had gone majorly wrong and he was acting very much out of character.

After a fairly typical start in life Danny started changing at about age 3. At that time he was having severe asthma attacks and an asthma specialist they consulted put him on various meds – primarily Singulair and Advair. These meds caused major side effects for Danny. He began to hallucinate, became irritable, aggressive and had tantrums several times a day. He also had night terrors and wasn’t sleeping well.

“We felt like Danny just wasn’t in his right mind,” said Amanda. “The asthma specialist insisted the problems weren’t caused by the medications but I felt certain they had triggered his decline.”

Amanda began doing research on the Internet and came across Dr. Amy Davis’ name. She checked out the Crossing Back to Health Web site and decided it was worth a try to see if Dr. Davis could help. That was shortly after Danny’s 4th birthday

Last November Amanda and her husband Brad took Danny in for a two-and-a-half hour evaluation with Dr. Davis, who asked many questions about family history, symptoms and chronology. Then using her advanced computer testing she was able to pinpoint specific problems that needed to be addressed, such as the fact that he was not processing things well at all. The family had the option of having lab testing, including stool, urine and hair analyses and decided to give that a try as well.

“Everything the computer testing had shown was confirmed with the lab tests,” Amanda said, “which gave me great confidence in the whole process.”

Her confidence received its next boost when Amanda saw the results of Dr. Davis’ suggestions – that Danny reduce the amount of sugar in his diet and eliminate any foods with dyes, mono sodium glutamate (MSG), preservatives and processed white/wheat flour. Danny was able, however, to eat whole grains, dairy and soy. And he was put on a regimen of nutritional and herbal supplements, as well as homeopathic drops.

Within a week of their visit with Dr. Davis, Danny began to communicate; over the course of the next few months his tantrums decreased to once a week, aggressiveness subsided, and night terrors ended. Danny’s preschool teachers noted a huge improvement in his behavior, his communication skills with peers and his more affectionate demeanor.

During Danny’s March visit Dr. Davis addressed sensory issues. Again using computer testing she determined that he had visual and tactile sensitivities that caused him to become defensive. Sounds and smells also bothered him and caused him to have tantrums. The testing pointed out problem areas and supplements that could correct them. Within a few weeks they noticed huge positive changes in his sensory processing that translated to better overall functioning. And, in the process of all that, Danny’s asthma issues that had precipitated this calamity became less severe.

“Before we saw Dr. Davis I was constantly on edge,” Amanda said. “I wasn’t sure how much longer I could keep trying to help Danny when we had no results. I had lost my son and I was depressed and felt hopeless. I can only imagine how bad he must have felt.”

Now Amanda feels she has her son back – the happy little boy who got temporarily lost in a sea of the wrong prescription drugs. She and Brad have fun, family times with Danny and his little sister..

“We can enjoy our family once again,” said Amanda. “Our work with Dr. Davis has changed all our lives.”

New Lease on Life - “I’ll probably die of old age,” she now says with a chuckle, “or by getting hit by a truck!”

Patient: Melanie, age 71

Symptoms: Chronic Pancreatitis, Dizziness

Melanie has a new lease on life. She no longer believes her gastroenterologist’s prediction that her pancreas may quit working one day and she’ll starve to death. “I’ll probably die of old age,” she now says with a chuckle, “or by getting hit by a truck!”

But that wasn’t the case back in 2000 when she had her first attack. She had been ill off and on for 3 or 4 months before her first full-blown attack. The doctor explained to Melanie that when she had an attack the pancreas needed to rest. That meant subsisting on clear liquids such as water, Jell-o and weak tea for a week or two. Needless to say she lost a lot of weight and was very weak during those attacks. She explained that, even on good days, she would run errands in the morning and be so tired and in pain that she’d have to take a nap every afternoon.

Melanie was referred to a pancreatic specialist at Johns Hopkins who ran tests, diagnosed the problem as Chronic Pancreatitis and prescribed pancreatic enzymes (three with each meal) to handle the situation. The medication managed it much of the time but she still had flareups every couple of months when fasting was her only solution.

Then Melanie started thinking about Dr. Amy Davis who had had amazing success in dealing with her grandson’s Autism. “I asked my daughter if she thought Dr. Davis could help me and she said that she believed she could,” Melanie said.

Melanie started seeing Dr. Davis 18 months ago and is now proud to say that she considers herself one of Dr. Davis’ success stories. “Since I started seeing her I’ve only had one attack,” she said.

Using her approach – biomedical intervention as part of her testing protocol – Dr. Davis determined that Melanie needed to be off all sugar, flour, dairy and any products that contain food dyes. Melanie realized that she could not eat anything with more than 3 percent fat, no beef, avocado or salmon, all of which have more fat than her system can handle. Dr. Davis agreed and also put her on a variety of homeopathic remedies and herbs, including Chinese herbs, to help build up her system.

Melanie also sees Dr. Davis’ nurse Linda Murphy every four months for electrical stimulation. “That has also helped,” she said.

For breakfast Melanie eats eggs and oatmeal. She has salads with chicken, turkey or shrimp for lunch and her dinner consists of meat and vegetables. She is also able to eat fruits. “I’ve reduced the number of enzymes I take with every meal from three down to one,” she said.

The other issue Melanie was dealing with was chronic inner ear problems, which caused dizziness and motion sickness. “I wasn’t able to fly at all,” she said. But after just one acupuncture treatment that problem is 90 percent gone. She was delighted to report that she recently drove from Maryland to St. Louis without having to take Dramamine.

Then, just to improve her overall health, Melanie decided to go on a “Belly Fat Diet,” in which she eliminated sugar, flour and fruit for two weeks. This, she decided, was another piece to the “puzzle” of her overall health. “I feel really good when I eat what works for me,” she said. “I’m just eight pounds heavier than I was in college so I’m proud of that.”

Melanie said she owes a debt of gratitude to Dr. Davis. “She’s an amazing diagnostician. She’s a medical doctor and she knows acupuncture, Chinese Medicine, nutrition and specializes in treating children with Autism,” she said. “She can help people in ways that few others can. I hope that every medical school in the country will start training students in nutrition.”

Beyond Intervention - What’s a mom to do when she’s tried everything she can think of and nothing works?

Patient: Zack, age almost 4

Chief Complaints: “Toddler’s diarrhea” and speech delay

What’s a mom to do when she’s tried everything she can think of and nothing works? That’s what Zack’s mom, Christine, was faced with when she couldn’t find a way to get Zack’s diarrhea to stop. “He seemed to do OK for the first 14 months of his life when I nursed him,” she recalled. “But then the diarrhea began.”

At first Christine figured Zack must be lactose intolerant so she quit giving him any milk products. Although it helped a bit, the problem was far from solved. She read books, looked up information on the Internet, worked with her pediatrician, even took him to a pediatric gastrointestinal specialist. Zack had stool analyses, blood tests and was put on probiotics. Still no resolution to the problem.

Then Christine heard of Dr. Amy Davis from a relative who had had a very positive experience with her autistic child and decided to give Dr. Davis a try.

For their first visit Christine and her son Zack saw Dr. Davis’ nurse, Linda Murphy, and things immediately began to change. Linda suggested that they limit Zack’s gluten although whole wheat products in moderation were OK. Sugar, except for a limited amount of cane sugar or honey, was eliminated, as were preservatives, food dies and MSG. To supplement his system, Zack was given Omega 3s, enzymes, a multivitamin and some minerals.

It turns out that many things in Zack’s body were just not working together and some foods that he couldn’t process were backing up in his system and even causing toxicity in his brain. With making the initial changes the diarrhea issue ceased, leaving Christine and her husband Eric feeling a tremendous sense of relief.

But Christine knew there were other things that were just not right with Zack. At 3 he wasn’t speaking at all, except to scream “Mom” when things weren’t going well for him. Zack had been participating in an Early Intervention speech program and had occupational therapy as well. He’d made some progress but not enough, according to his mom.

So, for his next appointment, Zack saw Dr. Davis who supported the many things Christine had done with her son, modified some and, with her advanced computer testing, was able to pinpoint other issues. Although Christine didn’t fully understand the process and its findings, she learned that Zack’s methyl pathways were off, which left him unable to process either foods or information. Ammonia was forming and settling in his body.

Using homeopathics such as Liver Tone and drainage supplements as part of a detox program, Zack is making great progress. “When his body functions better he’s able to learn better,” said Christine. “What Dr. Davis did made it easier for the occupational and speech therapists to do their work with him.”

Today Christine and Eric can hardly believe the changes in their son. He goes to Pre-K for 2 ½ hours a day and while he’d still rather play by himself he does interact with the other children. And his speech is 100 percent better. He went from saying nothing to recently commenting to his mom, “I’ve been thinking about the fruit snacks you said I could have so I washed my hands.”

Christine’s first reaction was, “Who is this kid anyway?”

Then she remembered.. and felt very grateful for all Dr. Davis did for them, adding, “There may be no real way to PROVE that what Dr. Davis does works, but it DOES!!!
